Basic soil research

Soil sampling is the process of extracting a small volume of soil for subsequent analysis at a lab. The results obtained measure the concentration of certain metals in the soil, and are useful for geologists in areas where rock does not naturally outcrop at the surface, as it can be used to infer the geology beneath the soil. Because of this, it is an important early step in the exploration. Soil geochemical surveys are a well-established method that underpins many mineral exploration programmes-from regional reconnaissance to an individual deposit scale. Soil mineralogy is concerned with the inorganic minerals found in the pedosphere and to the depth of weathering. Soils and weathering profiles result from weathering of parent materials at the surface of the earth, (1) by physical disintegration of minerals originally occurring at the site, (2) by chemical and biological degradation of less resistant minerals, and (3) by recombinations and synthesis of new minerals. The occurrence of trace elements in soils is relevant to mineral exploration, as some soils themselves are important mineral deposits (e.g., bauxites), and to the monitoring of the environment.

Rock sampling

Geology teams collect rocks during the process of mapping and evaluating surface mineralization, which are used to document and assay to increase the exploration knowledge of the property. Grab, chip and channel are three types of samples of rock.

A mining feasibility study is an evaluation of a proposed mining project to determine whether the mineral resource can be mined economically. There are three types of feasibility studies used in mining, order of magnitude, preliminary feasibility and detailed feasibility.
