Roadmap to Mineral Exploration Guide 101

Comprehensive guide for geologists and mineral exploration companies

Roadmap to Mineral Exploration Guide

Mineral exploration has grown significantly in recent years, acting as a pillar for both mining and economic activities. We, at Grid, have meticulously curated a guide on mineral exploration - Roadmap to Mineral Exploration. It is a guide that takes an interdisciplinary approach in explaining the fundamentals of mineral exploration. Download the free e-guide today and get the Mineral Exploration Guide!

Types of exploration in mining

What are the different methods of exploration?

Boulder exploration, geological mapping in the field, geophysical surveys, geochemical sampling and drilling are examples of the methods we use in exploration to find new mineral deposits.

Geophysical and geochemical methods

Surface geophysical methods include magnetic, gravity, seismic refraction, seismic reflection, electrical resistivity, natural potential, ground penetrating radar, polarization, thermal methods as well as remote sensing methods. The method(s) selected will depend on the type of information needed, the nature of the subsurface materials and cultural interferences. Geochemical methods comprise stream sediment sampling, rock chip and channel sampling, costeaning (trench sampling) and bulk sampling.

What is the equipment used for mineral exploration?

Equipment which is specific for mineral exploration geologists, miners, surveyors & large scale researchers includes range finders, reduction and crushers, core saw, splitters, drills, flagging tape, sample tags and tag books, surface markers, core boxes, GPS, flags and stakes, geophysical testing tools, field storage equipment, fire assays, and other accessories.

Benefits of mineral exploration

A near accurate estimation on the volume of mineral deposits is very important because mineral exploration is a capital intensive operation. For a mining company, successful exploration and development lead to increased profits. For a local community or nation, successful mineral exploration and development can lead to jobs—often well paying—that otherwise would not exist.

Financing mineral exploration

How mineral exploration and development are financed influences how the financial risks of these activities are allocated. Most mineral exploration, as well as development prior to the decision to build a mine, is financed either through internal funds or equity. Internal funds typically are used by companies with operating mines. Equity is typically used by junior exploration companies with no operating mines.
