Overview of Mineral Processing

Initially, mineral processing had only two processes - comminution and concentration. But, modern mining techniques now involve four types of unit operations:-


Comminution is the process of reducing the particle size of the extracted materials. It is the first step in obtaining the valuable components out of ore. With the help of techniques like crushing and grinding reduction in the size of particles happens.


Sizing is a term generally used for the process of separating particles based on their size. It is done easily bypassing the particle through a series of screens with pre-set industry-accepted standards.


In mineral processing, concentration is the process of converting an ore from a low-grade material to concentrate on high grade. Such concentrations can be achieved with the help of single or a series of steps. However, the basic process is separating valuable minerals from the waste rock with minimal or no loss.


Dewatering is an essential part of mineral processing, as it helps in achieving a transportable state of minerals. All tailing and concentrations from all the previous stages are removed at this stage. Besides, dewatering plays a crucial role in enhancing the pulp density of an ore.
